It's easy to let your oral health routine slip when you're in holiday mode — late nights, sugary cocktails, and unfamiliar bathrooms can all take their toll. The good news is that keeping your smile in great shape while you're away is simpler than you might think. It just takes a little preparation.
Here's our guide to what to pack to keep your teeth happy from departure lounge to airport transfer home.
The Essentials
✈️ A Good Travel Toothbrush
Whether you prefer manual or electric, make sure you bring one you trust. If you use an electric toothbrush at home, invest in a travel-sized version or a protective case for your brush head — and don't forget the charging cable or a spare set of batteries. A flimsy hotel freebie is no substitute for the real thing.
🪥 Fluoride Toothpaste
Don't assume you'll pick some up when you land. Toothpaste formulations vary widely around the world, and some may contain lower fluoride levels than you're used to. Bring a travel-sized tube of your regular paste, or decant some into a small container if you're travelling carry-on only.
🧵 Floss or Interdental Brushes
This is the one most people forget — and the one that matters most on holiday. With all those restaurant meals, barbecues, and mezze platters, food gets stuck in places your toothbrush simply can't reach. Pack a small roll of floss or a pack of interdental brushes (the tiny bottle-brush-style cleaners your dentist probably recommends). Your gums will thank you.
💧 Travel Mouthwash
A small bottle of antibacterial mouthwash is a great addition to your holiday kit. It's particularly useful after long flights, late nights, or days when brushing twice just hasn't happened. Look for an alcohol-free formula if your teeth are sensitive or if you're prone to a dry mouth.
Extras Worth Considering
🦷 A Dental Travel Kit or Toothbrush Cover
Keeping your toothbrush hygienic in a washbag full of sunscreen and lip balm is harder than it sounds. A ventilated toothbrush cap or a compact travel case will keep things clean and protect the bristles from getting squashed.
💊 Dental Pain Relief
Nobody wants to think about toothache on holiday, but being prepared is sensible. Pack some over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol, and consider adding a small tube of temporary dental cement (available from most pharmacies). If a filling or crown comes loose while you're away, this can provide short-term relief until you can see a dentist on your return.
🧴 Sensitive Teeth Toothpaste or Gel
If you already experience sensitivity, cold drinks, ice cream, and temperature changes abroad can make it worse. A small tube of sensitivity toothpaste can make a real difference — some can even be applied directly to the tooth as a soothing gel.
👄 Lip Balm with SPF
Your lips are part of your oral health too. Sun exposure can cause dryness, cracking, and in serious cases, damage to the delicate skin around the mouth. An SPF lip balm is a small but important addition to your holiday bag.
Holiday Habits to Keep in Mind
Packing the right kit is only half the battle. Here are a few simple habits to maintain while you're away:
- Brush twice a day — morning and night, even if the evenings are long and the mornings lazy.
- Stay hydrated with water. Sugary drinks, alcohol, and acidic juices are holiday staples, but they're hard on your enamel. Sipping water throughout the day helps neutralise acids and wash away food debris.
- Wait before you brush. After acidic food or drink (think citrus, wine, or fizzy drinks), wait at least 30 minutes before brushing, to avoid scrubbing softened enamel.
- Rinse after swimming. Chlorinated pool water and sea water can both affect your teeth over time. A quick rinse with fresh water after a swim is a good habit.
- Don't use your teeth as tools. It sounds obvious, but opening bottles, tearing packaging, or biting into hard local specialities (we're looking at you, toffees and whole nuts) is a fast track to a cracked tooth.
Before You Go
The best thing you can do for your teeth before a holiday? Book a check-up. Getting your teeth and gums seen to before you travel means any potential problems can be caught early — before they turn into an emergency abroad.
If you're due a visit, or it's been a while since your last appointment, we'd love to see you before you head off. Get in touch with our team to book your pre-holiday check-up today.
