It's one of the questions we're asked most often at our Broomhill practice: "Should I go for Invisalign or traditional braces?"
It's a genuinely good question — and one that deserves an honest, straightforward answer rather than a one-size-fits-all recommendation. Both options can give you a beautifully straight smile. But how you get there, and what your daily life looks like during treatment, can be very different.
Over the years we've helped hundreds of patients weigh up exactly this decision. Here's what we'd tell you face to face.
First, a Quick Overview
Invisalign uses a series of custom-made clear aligners — worn over your teeth like a thin, transparent mouthguard — to gradually shift your teeth into position. Each set is worn for around a week before moving on to the next. No wires. No brackets. Virtually invisible.
Traditional fixed braces use metal or ceramic brackets bonded directly onto your teeth, connected by a wire that applies gentle, continuous pressure. They stay in place throughout your treatment and are adjusted at regular appointments.
Both are clinically proven. Both work. The difference lies in how they work — and how they fit around your life.
The Key Differences: An Honest Comparison
How They Look
Let's be direct: if discretion matters to you, Invisalign is in a different league.
The aligners are transparent and sit snugly over your teeth. In most everyday situations — at work, out for dinner, in a meeting — people simply won't notice them. Our patients often tell us they felt completely comfortable throughout treatment without ever having to explain themselves or feel self-conscious.
Fixed braces, even tooth-coloured ceramic ones, are visible. Many younger patients wear them confidently and that's absolutely fine — but if you're an adult who'd rather keep your orthodontic treatment to yourself, this matters.
For discretion: Invisalign wins, clearly.
Comfort Day to Day
Invisalign aligners are made from smooth, flexible plastic with no sharp edges. There's no risk of a wire digging in or a bracket coming loose mid-week. When you switch to a new set of aligners, you may feel a little pressure for a day or so — which is actually a good sign that your teeth are moving — but most patients adapt quickly.
With fixed braces, tightening appointments can cause some discomfort for a few days afterwards, and the hardware inside your mouth takes some getting used to. Orthodontic wax helps with any rubbing, but it's an extra consideration.
For comfort: Invisalign has the edge.
Eating and Drinking
One of the things our Invisalign patients love most: you can eat and drink whatever you like. Before every meal, you simply remove your aligners, enjoy your food, brush your teeth, and pop them back in. That's it.
With fixed braces, certain foods are off the menu — anything sticky, crunchy, or hard that could dislodge a bracket or get trapped in the wire. It's not the end of the world, but it does require some adjustment to your routine.
For flexibility at mealtimes: Invisalign, by a mile.
Keeping Your Teeth Clean
Oral hygiene is genuinely important during orthodontic treatment, and this is where the difference is significant.
With Invisalign, you remove the aligners, brush and floss as normal, and clean the aligners themselves. Your daily routine doesn't change in any meaningful way.
With fixed braces, cleaning around the brackets and wire requires more time and care. Interdental brushes and floss threaders become part of your daily kit, and there's a higher risk of plaque building up around the brackets if cleaning isn't thorough.
For oral health during treatment: Invisalign is considerably easier.
How Long Treatment Takes
This varies from person to person and depends on how much movement is needed, but as a general guide:
- Invisalign: typically 6 to 18 months for most cases. Mild corrections can sometimes be achieved in under a year. The key is wearing your aligners consistently — 20 to 22 hours a day is the minimum for treatment to progress as planned.
- Fixed braces: typically 12 months to 3 years for more complex cases, though simpler cases can be completed in under a year.
One thing worth knowing: because braces are fixed, treatment keeps progressing regardless of what you do. With Invisalign, the responsibility is partly yours — if you're not wearing them consistently, results will take longer. It suits patients who are motivated and committed to the process.
For speed: comparable on straightforward cases; braces may be more reliable for complex ones.
What Each Can Treat
Invisalign has come a long way. With features like precision attachments, power ridges, and increasingly sophisticated aligner design, it can now treat a wide range of orthodontic issues effectively — including crowded teeth, gaps, overbites, underbites, and crossbites. The vast majority of the cases we treat at Bealby & Jones with Invisalign achieve excellent, lasting results.
That said, very complex cases — significant skeletal discrepancies, severe bite issues, or situations requiring precise multi-directional movements — may still be better suited to fixed braces. We'll always tell you honestly if we think a different approach would serve you better.
The most reliable way to know what's possible for your specific situation is to come in, have a scan, and let us show you a digital simulation of how your teeth would move. No guesswork — you'll see a projected result before committing to anything.
For versatility: Invisalign handles most cases beautifully; braces remain the go-to for highly complex treatment.
Cost
We believe in complete transparency on this, which is why we publish our fees openly.
At Bealby & Jones, Invisalign packages start from £3,000 — and that's a complete package, not just the aligners. Included as standard:
- 3D digital scans and OPG
- 3 sets of Vivera Retainers (worth £525)
- Boutique Teeth Whitening (worth £350)
- Fixed Retainers per arch (worth £150 per arch)
We offer 0% finance from £250 per month over 12 months, subject to status, so the cost can be spread comfortably.
So, Which Is Right for You?
For most of our adult patients in Sheffield, Invisalign is the treatment we recommend — and the one they choose. It fits around real life. It's discreet enough that most people around you won't know you're having treatment. It's comfortable, it protects your oral health, and when it's done, you'll have teeth whitening and retainers included as part of your package.
Fixed braces are still a highly effective treatment, and for certain complex cases, they may genuinely be the right clinical choice. We'll always give you our honest recommendation based on your teeth, not on what's easiest for us.
