Composite bonding can change the shape, size and colour of your teeth in a single visit, often with little or no removal of natural tooth. It is a popular choice because it is conservative and natural looking. But like any dental work, it needs looking after. The good news is that a few simple habits, combined with regular professional care, can help your bonding stay smooth, bright and comfortable for longer.
Here is what we recommend to our patients.
1. Brush and clean between your teeth every day
Composite is a tooth-coloured resin, and plaque can build up on its edges just as it does on natural teeth. That can lead to dull margins, staining and gum inflammation around the bonding.
- Brush twice a day for two minutes with a soft or medium toothbrush and a fluoride toothpaste.
- Use floss or interdental brushes daily. Ask us which size suits you, as the right tool makes a real difference.
- Be gentle. Scrubbing hard does not clean better and can dull the surface over time.
2. Choose your toothpaste carefully
Very abrasive toothpastes, including some charcoal and strongly whitening products, can gradually wear the polished surface of composite. A smooth surface resists stain better, so protecting it matters. If you are unsure which toothpaste to use, bring it to your next appointment and we will tell you whether it is a good fit.
3. Keep an eye on staining
Composite can pick up stain more readily than natural enamel, especially in the first weeks and as the surface ages.
- Tea, coffee, red wine, cola, curry and some sauces are the usual culprits.
- Smoking and vaping can also discolour bonding.
- You do not need to give these up. Rinsing your mouth with water afterwards, using a straw for cold drinks and not sipping all day all help.
One point worth knowing: whitening treatments change natural teeth but do not change the colour of composite. If you are thinking about whitening, speak to us before you have bonding, so the shades can be matched to the colour you want.
4. Protect it from chips and knocks
Composite is strong, but it is not as hard as natural enamel, and the edges of bonded teeth are most at risk.
- Avoid biting your nails, pen lids, ice or hard sweets.
- Never use your teeth to open packets or bottles.
- Cut very hard foods, such as crusty bread or apples, into pieces rather than biting straight in with your front teeth.
- Wear a mouthguard for contact sport.
5. Tell us if you clench or grind
Grinding and clenching, often at night, is one of the most common reasons bonding chips or wears early. If you wake with a tight jaw, headaches or sore teeth, mention it at your next visit. A custom-made night guard can protect your bonding and your natural teeth.
6. Keep up with professional cleaning, including Airflow
Home care is important, but it cannot do everything. Professional cleaning removes the build-up and surface stain that brushing leaves behind.
At Bealby and Jones we offer Airflow, a gentle air-polishing treatment that uses a fine spray of air, water and a low-abrasive powder to lift plaque and surface stain from your teeth. Many patients find it comfortable and quick, and it can reach areas that are hard to clean by hand. We can advise whether Airflow is right for you and how often to have it, and our hygiene team will choose the approach that is kind to your bonding.
7. Come back for regular check-ups
Small problems with bonding, such as a rough edge, a tiny chip or a slightly stained margin, are usually simple to fix when they are caught early. Left alone they can get bigger. At your check-ups we look at the bonding itself, the edges, your bite and the health of your gums, and polish or repair the bonding if it needs it.
How long bonding lasts varies from person to person. It depends on your bite, your habits, your oral hygiene and how often it is reviewed. With good care, many patients enjoy their results for several years, and bonding can usually be polished, repaired or refreshed rather than replaced from scratch.
